Willow Creek Campout April 2008
Justin W., Troop Historian
Willow Creek is one of the Troop's favorite campouts. Willow Creek is located out near Emmett. We always
set up on the southwest side of the bridge. We are recognized by our signature cook tent which is pink.
On our first day, we were roused by cannon fire and a bugle sound off. Quickly everyone got into their uniforms and lined up for the flag ceremony and uniform inspection. After a big briefing for the day, all the troops returned to their campsites to eat a big breakfast for a big day, pack their lunches, and gather their equipment for the course. Troop 112 broke into two patrols, a competitive patrol and a fun one for the younger Scouts to still be involved and learn the ropes. At the starting point, each troop was given a map and a course with degrees and distance. These instructions led to each station at Willow Creek. The Flaming Arrows made fast work with the map thanks to Brandon P. They oriented the map at break neck speed and were off. They visited first aid, scout knowledge, and fire building, just to name a few. They performed amazingly well at each and every one.
The only non-competitive area was the Civil War reenactment. It demonstrated blacksmithing and a telegraph station. The communication station also showed us how to use a large flag that moves left to right and up & down. Those four motions could be seen far away and are a quick way to send news, but the flag bearer would be worn out in half an hour. At the Civil War camp, there was also a Bradley Assault Vehicle. It was a stunning example of our modern scouts.
At the end of the day, all the troops gathered around a camp fire to be awarded their awards. The Flaming Arrows got first in archery, first in the mini-compass course, and third in the obstacle course. Justin W. was given third for his individual time in the obstacle course. The Dragons led by Erik L. achieved third in the mini-compass course. Troop 112 then enjoyed a late night snack of cherry chocolate cobbler.
The next morning everyone was awakened by the deafening boom of the cannon. Everyone knew the drill and got in line. Later we were given a Sunday Service while the judges inspected our campsite. We enjoyed our breakfast and were called back for the overall awards. The Flaming Arrows were given an all time high (for the Troop) of Third Place. We said our thanks, enjoyed a barbecued meal and headed home.
